Air Bags May Cause Eye Injuries but without Air Bags, the risk of injury is higher

Risk of Eye Injury due to air bags is less than without them

We have all heard there are pros and cons to air bags. Air bags save lives but a great deal has been written about the injuries or even deaths caused by air bag deployment. Recent studies set out to determine what risks are involved with air bag deployment and the injuries caused by the air bag deployment. The National Automotive Sampling System conducted study of the various injuries sustained by air bag deployment. Of all occupants who were exposed to an air bag deployment, 3% sustained an eye injury as compared to 2% of occupants not exposed to an air bag deployment sustained an eye injury. In conclusion, the study found that while occupants exposed to an air bag deployment had a slightly higher risk of sustaining minor eye injuries, the air bag appears to have reduced the number of severe eye injuries. Therefore, the benefits of air bags still

outweigh the risks with regard to eye injuries sustained in an accident.
