American Medical Association Urges Ban on Text Messaging While Driving

The danger of accident while driving and text messaging demands action according to the American Medical Association

It may come as a surprise that at the American Medical Association’s (AMA) agreed to “lobby for more state legislation banning text-messaging while driving or operating machinery.â€ Numerous cities and states have already passed legislation making texting while driving illegal.

This position comes on the heels of a warning issued by the American College of Emergency Physicians. Members of that organization said they “had seen severe injuries and even deaths linked to texting while driving.

Dr. Peter Carmel, a member of the AMA, said a recent study indicated that texting while driving “causes a
400 percent increase in time spent with eyes off the road. No one should have to worry that other drivers are focused on texting instead of traffic. The new policy would also encourage doctors to take a preventive measure by advising patients of the dangers of texting while driving.
