Archbishop Dolan's role in church abuse scandal considered

According to the New York Times, (5/17, A1, Kovaleski), Catholic Church officials must often play a difficult balancing game when faced with the threat of a sexual abuse lawsuit. Bishops and Archbishops must weigh multifarious interests: the demands for restitution from abuse victims, the ossified church hierarchy's concern about tremendous damages awards, and parishioners angry over payments, as well as the troubles expressed by individual priests, especially when they feel they've been falsely accused. There is some cause for alarm in the arrival of a new Archbishop to New York, who worked so hard in his previous role in St. Louis and Milwaukee to limit lawsuis and settlements.
